Rick Tailby
Rick’s creations begin with a remnant from the ancient Eucalyptus trees that have lived and died on Scotland Island, for thousands of years. These trees bear the scars of extreme existence. Drought, fire, lightning, and termites all contribute to their eventual decline. And yet, something always endures. This presence is a testament to the resilience of nature itself.
These weathered remnants offer wisdom, a raw honesty that speaks to strength, endurance and grace under pressure, offering clues to how we might live more meaningful, connected lives. The termites’ industry offers us a metaphor for our contemporary existence.
The artistic process begins with a serendipitous encounter in the bush, a moment of recognition between artist and material. As he works on each unique piece, Rick reveals every intricate knot, twine and stretch and the hidden story of the wood. Each finished object becomes two identities entwined in a natural resolution.
